100 Steps to Freedom

by Tamera Lynn Kraft

Before the Civil War, Ohio had the largest Underground Railroad of any state in the Union. It is believed that every county in Ohio had a route. Many slaves would escape over the Ohio River and through Ohio on their way to Canada. This was a dangerous undertaking because, even though Ohio was a free state, the Fugitive Slave Law made it so anyone helping escaped slaves could be fined and jailed.

One small town, Ripley, Ohio, is believed to have helped more slaves escape than any town in Ohio. Ripley is located on the banks of the Ohio River across from Mason County, Kentucky.

One man who helped slaves escape was a freed black man named John Parker. Parker was educated by his master in Virginia and eventually bought his freedom. He traveled to Ohio and opened a foundry on Front Street facing the Ohio River. He was the first black man to earn a patent for one of the inventions he used in his foundry. At night, he would search the Ohio River looking for escaped slaves and helping them find their way to an Underground Railroad Station.

Rev. John Rankin, a Presbyterian minister, owned a house on top of a hill in Ripley. He built one hundred steps to the house that could be seen on the other side of the river. At night, he would light a lantern and hang it from the porch to signal slaves that it was safe to cross. It is estimated that over 2,000 slaves escaped through the Rankin House. None of them were ever recaptured. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote her famous novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, about the escape of the slave, Eliza, after hearing the story from Rev. Rankin.

Rev. John Rankin’s house is in my novel, Red Sky Over America. John Parker also is introduced as a minor character. The story takes place on the Ohio River in Kentucky across from Ripley where all these exciting events happened.

Oberlin College: A School Ahead of Its Time

My current novel series, Ladies of Oberlin, is about 3 women roommates who graduated from one of the most amazing colleges in American history, Oberlin College. Book 1, Red Sky Over America focuses on America, a woman attending Oberlin who is an abolitionist studying to become a missionary. The problem is her father is a slave owner. Here’s a little bit about this amazing college.

Oberlin College, founded in 1833 in Northern Ohio, was a college ahead of its time in many ways. In 1835, it became the first college in the United States to regularly admit African Americans. It’s also the oldest co-educational college in the US. In 1837, it admitted four women, three of whom graduated and earned a college degree. Mary Jane Patterson, another Obeberlin graduate, became the first African American woman in 1862 to earn a Bachelor of Arts college degree.

One of Oberlin’s founders once bragged that “Oberlin is peculiar in that which is good”. Oberlin was peculiar in many ways in advancing the causes of the time. Charles Finney, the second president of the college, helped it earn its controversial reputation. He was the fiery evangelist of the Second Great Awakening, a Christian revivalist movement in the early and mid 1800s.

Oberlin College was the hotbed of abolitionist activity and a stop for the Underground Railroad before the Civil War. It was once called “the town that started the Civil War” because of its participation in the Oberlin Wellington Rescue in 1858. Slave catchers came to Oberlin to capture an escaped slave and return him to Kentucky. Most of the town came to the slave’s aid and rescued him. For their trouble, over twenty were arrested and put on trial for violating the Fugitive Slave Act. During the raid on Harper’s Ferry by John Brown, three men from Oberlin participated.

Oberlin College was also well known for the women who graduated from the college and participated in the suffrage and prohibition movements. Lucy Stone, considered a pioneer for the women’s movement, graduated from Oberlin College in 1847.

Oberlin was also very well known in the missionary movement of the late 1800s. Between 1860 and 1900, 90% of missionaries sent overseas by the American Missionary Society were graduates of Oberlin College. Between 1899 and 1901, thirteen missionaries from Oberlin were martyred during the Boxer Rebellion of China. An arch in Tappan Square at the center of Oberlin pays honor to their sacrifices.

My thoughts:

I loved this book. I am so excited that this is the first book in a series!

This whole plot was very intriguing. I loved America’s heart to help the slaves and Williams as well. I couldn’t wait to see how these two would find their way back together.

The sad part is I’m sure a lot of what I read actually did happen. I can’t imagine watching someone treat another human being the way it is described here, but it happened.

If you enjoy historical romance with some grit I highly recommend this one.

About:

NOURISH will provide you with encouragement and practical knowledge for living a healthy lifestyle, both physically and spiritually.
NOURISH is not another health or diet book; the message of this book is unique as it addresses all three aspects of health: spirit, soul, and body. The practical and spiritual tools provided in this book are what sets it apart from the rest of its kind. Too many people give up on their journey to health because they have a plan that addresses only the physical aspect of health. However, this book encourages the reader to first pursue health at a heart level, bringing lasting change that comes from the inside out.
In this book, you will discover how the health of your soul is the foundation to your overall health. Katie shares how to renew your mind and study God’s word, which will change the perspective on how you see yourself, making loving yourself (and your body) possible.
You will learn how to replace lies with the truth and shift your focus from what the world says to what God’s Word says. In addition to the spiritual truths, you will learn how to nourish your body with clean eating foods and get practical tools that make healthy living enjoyable and maintainable.
NOURISH will provide you with encouragement and practical knowledge for living a healthy lifestyle, in addition to providing a balance of spiritual and physical nourishment. This book will inspire you to get healthy from the inside out.

My thoughts:

My heart broke as I read Katie’s story and then it rejoiced as I read about how God redeemed her. Such a powerful testimony. Katie definitely has a Genesis 5020, what the enemy tried to use to harm her she now uses to encourage and help others.

This book is about much more than just food, it’s about overall good health, but especially spiritually, which, I believe, is the root of ultimate health.

At the end of each chapter is a recipe too, yum! Since I follow the Trim Healthy Mama plan I probably won’t make most of the sweet stuff since it uses honey and baking stevia but they sound good.

This is a great book for anyone who is struggling in any area of their lives to get a refresher or wake up to the truth of who God says you are.

About:

Marshall Hail was a husband, a father, a Physics Nobel prize winner and industrial billionaire. But when Hail’s family was killed in a terrorist attack, he became a predator and redirected his vast industrial assets toward one goal

My thoughts:

For those that follow my blog this is not a Christian fiction book.

I picked this book up knowing it would be different from my normal read but it sounded interesting.

It was interesting. There were things in that almost seemed like it could even happen and be true. It was fascinating to go behind the scenes in a war type setting.

Although, there were a lot of interesting ideas, for me, this book moved too slow. There were so many details and a lot of bunny trails. I realize these trails added depth, which I did find helpful in better understanding the characters but I found my mind wandering and I wasn’t able to stay focused on the book.

However, just because this wasn’t the book was for me doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t thoroughly enjoy it, I believe many  others would really like this book, it was just too different from my typical read.

Title: Together Forever, Orphan Train Book 2

30,000 Abandoned Children

By Jody Hedlund

Imagine a city where 30,000 abandoned and homeless children live on the streets.

Sounds like something from a futuristic dystopian novel, doesn’t it? Or something that might happen after a war or apocalypse or major disaster, right?

This exact thing actually happened in the 1850’s. And the city was New York City.

It’s hard to believe, but an estimated 30,000 homeless children roamed the dirty city streets and alleys of New York City.

30,000. Children. Let that sink in for a minute. That’s the size of a town.

Historians look back on that time and try to make sense what led to such horrific conditions for children. Of course, the influx of immigrants was at an all time high. Jobs and housing were scarce. Diseases were rampant. Hunger and poverty became a norm. (Orphan Train Depot)

Together forever 1Together forever 2

As more and more people became aware of the enormous problem within the crowded slums, courageous heroes rose up and attempted to do their part to make a difference.

While we may not always agree with the methods that were used to save the thousands of homeless children, we can admire the men and women who could no longer sit idly by.

The Children’s Aid Society was started by Charles Loring Brace as one such attempt to help the hordes of homeless children. His “Emigration Plan” is better known today by the term “Orphan Trains.”

Together forever 3Together Forever

My latest series tackles various elements of the orphan train movement. Together Forever, releasing in May, highlights the placing agents, those devoted people who rode the trains with the orphans. The agents spent weeks and months on the road caring for the children, all the while trying to place them in loving homes.

(If you’d like to try out the series, start with my FREE novella, An Awakened Heart.)

Like the brave men and women who came before us, may we always strive to do our part to make a difference!

My thoughts:

I am a Jody Hedlund fan and she never lets her readers down.

From the first chapter we are thrown into Marianne’s life and meet Drew and know the two will have a very interesting relationship.

This book is the 2nd in a series, however you can read it as a stand-alone. I forgot a lot about the first book because it had been about year since I read it but that didn’t keep me from enjoying this one.

The story of these young children is heartbreaking and to know this actually happened makes it even more so.

Historical romance lovers will not be disappointed in this newest installment from Jody.

Review and Giveaway: Journible by Robert Wynalda and Joel Beeke

About these Books

Exodus PhotoTitle: Journible: The 17:18 Series

Author: Robert Wynalda (a local businessman) and Dr. Joel R. Beeke (President of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary)

Genre: Non-fiction, Bible study tool

Release Date: Series released in 2009

Why the 17:18 series?
In Deuteronomy 17, Moses is leaving final instructions concerning the future of Israel. As a prophet of God, Moses foretells of when Israel will place a king over the nation (v. 14). In verse 18, the king is commanded to not simply acquire a copy of the law (the entire book of Deuteronomy) from the scroll publishing house, but to hand write his own copy of the law. Thirty-four hundred years later, educators are discovering that students that physically write out their notes by hand have a much greater retention rate than simply hearing or visually reading the information. Apparently, God knew this to be true of the kings of Israel also. From such understanding came the conception of this series of books.

How to Use These Books
Each book is organized so that you can write out your very own copy of Scripture. You will be writing the Bible text only on the right hand page of the book. This should make for easier writing and also allows ample space on the left page to write your own notes and comments. From time to time a question or word will be lightly printed on the left page; these questions are to aid in further study, but should not interfere with your own notes and comments.

My thoughts:

Before I started working on this book I wasn’t sure how much I would really like it. Writing the Word down? How good could that be?

So good.

I don’t know how to describe it but there is definitely power in writing out the Word of God. I have a whole God story that ties into this but I will save that for another post. Let’s just say I have no doubt God wanted me to go through this.

As I wrote the words went from fingers into my heart. I went through Romans and I have read Romans a few times before, but something about writing it made the words even more meaningful for me. I would love to do this with all the Journibles books available.

I encourage you to give it a try if this sounds interesting to you.

About:

After Brady Collins’ ex-wife dies, he receives devastating news—his nine-month-old son Sam isn’t his son at all. And Sam’s wealthy maternal grandparents want custody of the child. Brady knows he’s in for the fight of his life. But regardless of what any blood test says, Sam is his son, and Brady will go to any lengths to keep him.

Brady’s attorney tips him off that one major life change would virtually assure him of winning guardianship of baby Sam at the final hearing: an impending marriage. And his friend Hope is willing to step in as the loving and devoted fiance.

Local radio celebrity Hope Daniels has been driven by a solitary goal her entire life, and after a happy accident she’s finally offered her dream job. But if the truth comes out about her arrangement with Brady, she may miss the chance of a lifetime and stand in the way of a dear friend’s dreams.

As Brady and Hope make sacrifices to help each other in their times of need, they risk uncovering a truth neither of them expects to find.

My thoughts and giveaway:

This is a different kind of romance. It definitely doesn’t begin the way you might think.

But things seem to go along well once Brady and Hope decide to get married and the romance brews pretty hot.

So I figured what could possibly go wrong, but I wasn’t even halfway through the book. I knew something had to happen to stop things from flowing so smoothly.

What that is you will have to read to find out. If you enjoy Denise Hunter or romance you will enjoy this book.

Singing the Scriptures: How All Believers Can Experience Breakthrough, Hope and Healing by Julie Meyer May 17, 2018

About:

Unique, Powerful Way All Believers Can Experience Breakthrough

In the Bible, Moses sang. Miriam sang. So did Deborah, David, Mary, Paul, the angels, and so many more. The Israelites went to war singing; they sang over victories, over happy moments and hard moments. They knew something we’ve lost sight of: When we learn to sing God’s words back to Him, we align the deepest spaces of our hearts with the deepest places of His–and we experience breakthrough. So why do we relegate singing the Word to just worship teams?

Julie Meyer, a Dove-nominated artist and worship leader, has been teaching all believers how to do just this. She shows that you don’t need to know how to read music or even sing in tune. All you need is Scripture and a willingness to engage God in song. As you do, you will see heartache turn into hope, despair into destiny, fear into fearlessness. You stand on the Word, pray it, and even memorize it. Now it’s time to sing it.

My thoughts:

I love this idea, singing the scriptures. I will be honest, I haven’t tried it yet. But Julie shares many stories about how it has worked in her own life and the lives of others.

At the end of each chapter is a prayer, a few questions and then usually it will tell you to go visit her site, click on the chapter you just finished and do the activity. I haven’t had a chance to try any of that yet, but I do plan to.

She stresses that you do not have to be a worship leader or have a beautiful voice to do this. It is all about the Word getting in your heart and mind. If this sounds interesting to you I recommend this book

One Word from You by Susanne Dietze, based on Pride and Prejudice

Alarmingly Charming by Debra E. Marvin, based on Northanger Abbey
A timid gothic dime-novel enthusiast tries to solve the mystery of a haunted cemetery and, even more shocking, why two equally charming suitors compete for her attentions.

My thoughts:

Jane Austen fans will adore this collection (I will be reviewing the 2nd volume later this week).

Each story had it’s own plot but there were characters that connected each as well.

All are well-written and it don’t know if I could really pick a favorite. If I had to pick one it would probably be Refinement. But as I said, I enjoyed all of them and think anyone who lost Austen or historical romance will thoroughly enjoys this collection.

About:

New York, 2016
Natalie Abbott offers answers for hurting listeners on her popular radio program. But she struggles to connect with her teenagers, with her daughter in an unhealthy relationship and her son uncommunicative and isolated. When one member of the family commits an unspeakable act, Natalie is forced to uncover who she truly is under the façade of her radio persona.

New York, 1776
Mercy Howard is shocked when her fiancé, Nathan Hale, is arrested and hanged as a spy. When she’s asked to join the revolutionary spy ring in Manhattan, she sees an opportunity to avenge Nathan’s death. But keeping her true loyalties hidden grows increasingly harder as the charming Major John Andre of the King’s Army becomes more to her than a target for intelligence.

Mercy’s journals comfort Natalie from across the centuries as both women struggle with their own secrets and shame, wondering how deep God’s mercy extends.

My thoughts:

Wow. This is one of the best books I have read recently. So good.

The thing is this book wasn’t what I accepted at all…it was so much better.

I don’t even know where to begin. I could so relate to Natalie as a mom. Worried about her kids, thinking she was over reacting.

Maelynn, Natalies’ daughter, is just a typical teenager, trying to fit in and be “cool”, yet questioning herself all of the time.

Mercy is a sympathetic, strong character.

All of these women have things to hide from the world.

I love the honesty of Natalie questioning God, so true to life. Life is messy and this book gets messy. I couldn’t put this one down. It is not your typical book at all, it spoke to my mama heart very deeply.
