My thoughts:

I always enjoy a Kristy Cambron’s books and this was no exception. If anything, this might have been my favorite yet.

First, the cover just draws you in, it is so beautiful. I usually love any story that takes place during WWII, so that also helped this book be a winner.

Lila and Sandrine’s stories are very interesting and I couldn’t wait to see if and when their worlds would collide. Their stories obviously overlapped but I didn’t know what the impact would be.

If you have read Kristy’s work in the past I am sure you will be pleased with this latest installment. If you haven’t read her work this is a good one to start with.

My thoughts:

Another good one by Tom. I really enjoyed this first book in this series and this second one did not disappoint.

Amara is on the homicide team but she isn’t very well liked and trying to make her way in this new position. She starts off with a case that could have been dismissed but she senses there is more to it then meets the eyes.

She is dealing with more then her job. Stuff going on with her mom and a budding relationship with Starsky.

My irritation was in how Amara dismissed a lot of things that I thought could be clues, of course, that did build more tension, which probably was the point.

But overall, a very engaging read. If you like suspense you will enjoy this book.

About the Author

Born and raised in west Michigan, Sharlene MacLaren attended Spring Arbor University. Upon graduating with an education degree in 1971, she taught second grade for two years, then accepted an invitation to travel internationally for a year with a singing ensemble. After traveling for a year, she returned to her teaching job, then in 1975, she reunited with her childhood sweetheart, and they married that very December. They have raised two lovely daughters, both of whom are now happily married and enjoying their own families. Retired in 2003 after thirty-one years of teaching, Shar loves to read, sing, travel, and spend time with her family—in particular, her adorable grandchildren!

Shar has always enjoyed writing, and her high school classmates eagerly read and passed around her short stories. In the early 2000s, Shar felt God’s call upon her heart to take her writing pleasures a step further, so in 2006, she signed a contract with Whitaker House for her first faith-based novel, Through Every Storm, thereby launching her professional writing career. With more than twenty published novels now gracing store shelves and being sold online, Shar gives God all the glory.

Faith Haviland swept a few strands of damp hair off her forehead, irritated by how it had escaped the neat bun of this morning. She shoveled more dishes into the sink and set to washing them as fast as possible to prepare for the supper crowd that would soon descend upon Daybreak Diner. It wasn’t a fairytale job by any means, but, alas, it was a job, and many would clamor for it if her Aunt Martha ever hung up a “Help Wanted” sign in the window. Her aunt, who happened to be her father’s younger sister, owned and operated the establishment and often stated her wish for Faith to one day take it over. Faith shuddered at the prospect of telling Martha she’d been entertaining the idea of leaving Columbus. Martha wouldn’t like the news, but Faith couldn’t worry about that. Things had grown too tedious in her hometown, and too many found it their job to remind her of the unfortunate event of her canceled wedding. Add to that the troublesome, if not peculiarly obsessive, behavior of Stuart Porter, and tedious hardly described it. Ever since her fiancé’s departure with her best friend just two weeks before their April 15 wedding day, Mr. Porter had started closing in on her, insisting he would marry her in an instant if she’d simply agree.
For as long as she could recall, the man had outwardly admired her, even though she had done nothing to encourage it. Nothing about him appealed to her. My thoughts:

I have read a few of Sharlene’s books and liked them, so I usually pick up her newest release, which I did with this one.

The premise of the story is very interesting and I wondered how this relationship between Joey and Faith could grow if he was leaving so soon? It was also obvious that the children would make things interesting. The tension around Stuart Porter finding Faith also kept me on my toes wondering what would happen when and if he found Faith.

But, if I’m being honest, something about this book just didn’t really click with me. There were a lot of repetition of things the that reader had read several times, like how many days until Joey went back to the army. I felt like we were reminded of that a lot more then needed to be, of course, I am sure it weighed heavy on the characters as that reality sunk in.

This wasn’t a favorite for me, but I am sure others will enjoy it if you have liked Sharlene’s other book.

This was an excellent book. The tension between the two families, how could they ever find their way out or to each other? All the deception and control, it looked hopeless. But that is what made the romance so good.

I kept expecting one of them to turn on the other, but their love for each other was so deep they would do anything to protect the other.

If you enjoy historical romance with a lot of twists and turns you will enjoy this read.

When my children were very young, my husband and I took a trip to Colorado for a family reunion. After the reunion we traveled through Colorado to see the sights. We stopped in Silverton and my sister and I took my young son and daughter down the narrow-gauge railroad to Durango. Riding the swaying train down slopes covered in pine trees with the rushing white water of the Animas River below, I knew I’d write about the area someday. Many years later my husband and I took our first “kid-less” vacation in our motorhome. We stayed in a campground on the Navajo Nation next to Canyon de Chelly. We had no running water or electricity and that night, a storm blew in from the west. We watched the sky change to hues of purple and pink and then sat mesmerized as lightning strikes crossed the magnificent valley. Once again, I planted the scenes in my mind, determined to write about them one day. Little did I know both vacations would combine into one story. My thoughts:

These two, Dulcie and Austin, seem like a very unlikely couple at first but as they are thrown together the reader begins to see how much they need each other and fill in the other’s gaps.

This will have you on the edge of your seat from the beginning as you see things through Dulcie’s eyes and the fear she must deal with. I could relate to her. I am always concerned that I would freeze in a moment of pressure and we see Dulcie do that but also how she can overcome that.

The complete reliance on God is a strong message throughout this book.

If you like romantic suspense I am sure you will enjoy this book.

My thoughts:

This is a much needed book. I think as Christians we often struggle with what it means to fear the Lord. One of my favorite verses recently is Proverbs 9:10: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom

I think we have lost the awesome fear of the Lord. I know I had. I would pick any song to sing and bring to the body on a Sunday, as a worship leader, without thought to if it was sound doctrine or could lead anyone astray. I had no fear. But that is all changing. A filial fear is something we should all have for the Creator of the universe.

Don’t know what that means? Give this short book a read, seriously, you can read this in about forty-five minutes or less.

Here are a couple of quotes that stuck out to me:

“Sinful fear hates God and therefore acts sinfully. Right fear loves God and therefore has a sincere longing to be like him.”

“Like a fire in the heart the fear of the Lord consumes sinful desires, and it fuels holy ones.”

My thoughts:

I am Jocelyn fan so whenever she comes out with a new book I am on it. This is the second book in this series. However, you can easily read this one and not feel lost if you haven’t read the first one.

I really enjoyed this story. The main characters were around my age but single, so that was interesting, especially for this time period. There was a lot of mystery and suspense in this book. There was one point before the end, but close, where I felt like things were getting wrapped up a bit to quickly and neatly and I felt disappointed. But I kept reading and what do you know, there was, literally, more the story.

If you enjoy historical romance with with some mystery involved you will enjoy this read.

My thoughts:

I haven’t read a book by Sarah in several years. I liked them and then I read a couple that I didn’t care so much for and stopped reading them. But when this one came up I thought, why not, it sounded interesting. I love anything WWII related.

Oh. My. This was an excellent book. Now I am wondering why I ever stopped reading her work?

For me, I know I don’t often think about what life was like leading up to the war. How some American’s had no clue or didn’t carry to know what was going on or some thought what Hilter was going was good. This book opens up the readers mind to what might have been going on, the shock of the people as German’s turned against Jews.

Evelyn’s story is very good, as she makes her way in a world that doesn’t want to hear her voice. When her full story is revealed it is very shocking and the reader can better understand why she is so tough.

Peter is fooled at first but quickly sees that what is happening in Germany is not okay and puts himself in danger to help fight the good fight.

If you love historical romance you will want to pick this one up.

My thoughts:

This is a lot of book, but I found it very interesting. I have heard of Bonhoeffer but didn’t know much about him. The author does a great job of making a bioagraphy read more like a novel. It was very engaging. But it is a loooong book, so there is your forwarning.

Bonhoeffer started off like any one of us, a normal family with struggles but he had a huge impact in the world. What an example for the rest of us. His faith was unshakeable. May we all be as brave as him.

My thoughts:

I wasn’t sure what to think of this book at first. It seemed strange to read a Christian book about a ghost. But I kept going. I don’t want to spoil anything but trust me, there is a logical explanation for everything.

I enjoyed Dini’s quirky, awkwardness and Quinn’s nerdiness. They made an unlikely, yet perfect, match.

The author did a wonderful job and tying up all the loose strings, and there were a lot. My brain kept scrambling to try and make sense of everything and Allison put it all together beautifully.

I am excited that this is a new series Barbour Publishing is putting out. I already plan on reviewing the next book. Can’t wait!
