Nathan Campbell’s father was investigating such a case when he was shot, and now Nathan needs to enlist Erin’s help to solve the case. She’s certainly good at what she does. The only problem? She’s his ex.

As the two dig deeper, it becomes clear that they, too, are being targeted–and the answers to their questions are buried deep within the past Erin struggles to explain and longs to forget.

My thoughts:

I have only read one other book by Elizabeth and I don’t know why. I didn’t even mean to request this book but I did and I have to say I am glad I did. I really enjoyed this read.

If you are a fan of Lynnette Eason or Patricia Bradley you will definitely enjoy this book.

There are so many twists and turns and surprises in this book there is never a dull moment. It seemed there were two different mysteries taking place, but were there? Are they connected? I guess you’ll have to read the book to find out.

I highly recommend this read.

“Look at that! The fattest girl in the class is the first one to get in line for a cupcake.”

Those words, spoken to me in junior high by a clueless boy, are forever seared into my memory. Just because I wasn’t a willowy stick-figure who didn’t match up to magazine covers, I was singled out. Made to feel ashamed. Made to feel like a monster.

Have you ever felt that way?

Chances are you have. We are all poked and prodded at some point in our lives…which brings up a few questions. How do you deal with the sometimes ugly perceptions with which others view you? How do you stop trying to prove your worth to others, when in their eyes you are somehow worthless? Why does God allow such hurtful things to happen anyway?

These are the questions I attempt to tackle in my new release, Lost in Darkness. And surprisingly enough, those are the very same issues contemplated in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Now hold on. Don’t go rolling your eyeballs quite yet—which is the usual response whenever Frankenstein is mentioned.

Most people’s conception of this great piece of literature has been forever ruined by Hollywood’s green creature. You know the one, the giant with bolts sticking out of his neck and a stiff-legged walk. So not true. The essence of Shelley’s “horror” story is instead about a creature who struggles with heartfelt needs that can only be met by his creator. In this story, Shelley respectfully handles the subject of what we owe our creator and what our creator’s responsibility is toward us as the created…the very same questions we all struggle with.

As does Colin Balfour, a man with a heart of gold and a face that causes children to scream. In Lost in Darkness, he hopes to undergo a life-changing surgery that will end his self-imposed isolation. But what really happens is a life change for his sister Amelia and the surgeon who tries to prevent it all from happening. For indeed, even if there be monsters, there is none so fierce as that which resides in man’s own heart.

My thoughts:

I have read a lot of Michelle’s books and this one ranks at the top of them.

I loved that gospel message in the book and I loved the characters. I was so concerned about Colin and what would happen when Dr. Peckwood got his hands on him. I kept hoping something would delay his surgery and then the truth about the doctor would come light (whatever that is exactly, it isn’t revealed for a while).

Amelia and Graham are both great characters that you will easily come to care for and be cheering them on in a romance that doesn’t seem possible.

If you like historical romance you will not be disappointed in this book.

The 1920’s is a fascinating era. Women had recently won the right to vote, and America adopted the Volstead Act – Prohibition – which led to the growth of underground clubs and organized crime. Women were forging new paths in social reform, politics, science, medicine and every other career. America became more urbanized, building suburbs and developing a large middle-class population. The affordable automobile changed the entire culture! It was a time of innovation and rapidly expanding technology. Synthetic fabrics, convenience foods, electric appliances and other inventions made daily life easier. People had more free time, money and access to a variety of entertainments than ever before.

So much happened in this brief, exciting decade between the end of WWI and the Great Depression! It’s always interested me, so I was flattered and thrilled when Celebrate Lit Publishing invited me to participate in The Ever After Mysteries, a collection of 1920’s mysteries inspired by fairy tales. I’m a great fan of mysteries from the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, and I read at least a thousand fairy tales as a child.

To be honest… I set about it backward. I knew I wanted to write about a young woman playing the Mighty Wurlitzer organ to accompany silent films at a glamorous movie palace, so I Iooked for a fairy tale to match it!

I chose The Nightingale, an old Chinese story about an Emperor with a beautiful palace. Everything in it was exquisite and fragile, and people came from all over the world to admire his palace. He loved to show it off and even tied little bells to the prettiest blossoms in the garden, to make sure no one missed them. When the emperor heard rumors about a bird that sang more beautifully than anything else, he sought it out and brought it home to live in the palace, where it could sing to entertain him and his guests.

At that point, the fairy tale and my story diverge. In the fairy tale, the nightingale lives in the palace singing for the court until the Emperor of Japan presents the Emperor of China with a bejeweled mechanical bird – so much prettier than the plain brown nightingale. The Chinese emperor abandons the real bird and enjoys the mechanical one until it breaks. He falls into a deep depression and is only restored to health by the return of the real nightingale.

None of that happens in Murder at the Empire, but there’s lot of other fun, jazzy excitement as the John Starek – the “Emperor” – fills his magnificent movie palace with fine artwork and beautiful things – including Chicago’s first female theater organist, Gayle Wells. He thinks she’s the bee’s knees, but she’s a pretty independent girl, busy working and saving money to buy her own car.

And then things start falling apart… with murder at the Empire. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it!

My thoughts:

This is the first book I have read in this series. I actually heard an interview about it on a podcast and decided I might like these stories. I am happy to say I plan on reading the rest of the this series.

This was a quick read, which I always appreciate it and very well done. I am not familiar with the fairytale this book is based on but that didn’t matter to me.

Cathe did a great job of keeping me guessing about who was behind everything and the ending was very satisfying and a bit surprising.

I liked Gayle’s spunk. She was a hard working young lady trying to break some stereotypes in the 1920s.

Overall, a very good read that I recommend.

My thoughts:

When I heard that Costi was coming out with this book I couldn’t wait to read it. He played a part in me walking away from the prosperity gospel (even though I didn’t even know I was in it). When I was in that I focused so much on God healing and receiving spiritual gifts. I believed God owed me healing because I was faithful to Him and many of the teachers I listened to taught me that it was God’s will to heal all of the time.

God is a healer but He is so much more and that is what this book walks you through and Costi shares his own testimony about his son.

So many good qoutes I highlighted throughout this book, here are a few:

Page 33, “We must be reminded that the Christian faith is not about feeling, it’s about knowing.”

Page 51, “If Jesus’ being your Savior isn’t enough for you, you are in serious, spiritual danger.”

Page 167, “Understanding that Jesus is more than a healer means understanding that he is deserving of your thanks no matter what you are facing.”

If those quotes got you thinking or even feeling a bit convicted this might be a great book for you!

Why I Wrote This Novel

I got a chance to write another novel set on Mackinac Island!!!

I’m the author of over twenty published stories. I have many books, both novel and novella length, set at the Straits of Mackinac including Maggie Award winner and Romantic Times Top Pick My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island. In the summer, I go up to the area and I’m blessed to sign books at the Island Bookstore—sometimes hundreds of books which is such an amazing thing I can’t tell you! Now that MHBoMI is out of print, Barbour has been helping by doing limited print runs for while I am up there.

My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island was originally part of a full series that I pitched but it didn’t get picked up for all three stories. MHBoMI got picked up as part of the My Heart Belongs series that Barbour put out a few years ago. The second book in my original Brides of Mackinac series was heroine Sadie’s story, which was published as a novella “His Anchor” in First Love Forever collection.  So I had two of my book babies delivered out into the world and Lily’s story sat there for a while.

In the Covid summer of 2020, I arrived in my home state of Michigan and over dinner with a close friend I learned that the folks at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island were having legal trouble with their previous long-time designed Carlton Varney suing them. I’d been disappointed that the Mussers, who’d owned the Grand for generations, had sold the hotel but this new development really bugged me.  While I was in the Upper Peninsula, I finished an Indy book, Dogwood Plantation, which only figures since I often write my Michigan stories while I am in Virginia and vice versa! I knew the only other book I wanted to work on was to complete my Brides of Mackinac trilogy (not exactly since they aren’t all in one series!) with Lily’s story. I also had a manuscript about 70% done that was my very first contemporary Women’s Fiction novel. When my agent encouraged me to submit a Mackinac Island story set at the Grand Hotel to Barbour’s Doors to the Past series, I knew immediately that the only story for historical I wanted to write was Lily’s. That meant that I needed, for this dual-timeline series, a contemporary story. That wasn’t just a chance sharing at dinner—I believe the info about the lawsuit was meant to be passed on to me one of those God-incidences. My modern-day heroine then became an established resort designer who had a trunkful of issues just like Lily did.

Was I ever glad that I had finally written my first contemporary Women’s Fiction (Butterfly Cottage) because that skill set came in very handy in writing the modern-day 2020 story of Willa in Behind Love’s Wall! This was the most difficult novel to write that I have done so far as I write in character and going back and forth between the 1895 and 2020 timelines could be draining. I tried to write each character and setting on separate days but that couldn’t always be managed.

I pray that this story will touch readers’ hearts. I pray that someone, like the young waitress I meant on Mackinac Island who had been spiritually moved by My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island (she read her grandmother’s copy after her grandma passed away!), will read this book and feel that connection to our Maker. That’s what Christian Fiction is all about!

My thoughts:

I, of course, loved the setting for this book. Mackinac Island is one of my favorite places in the world so it was great to visit there and remember the setting.

I found it interesting that the author choose not to mention the scent of horse manure when describing the smells when we get to the island because it definitely there.

I recently heard an interview the author did and she acknowledged that she wanted to be true to the time so she included COVID and wearing masks in her story. I also heard another author says that readers say it’s too early to read about COVID in our fictional books. I have to agree with the second opinion. I read to escape, especially the pandemic, I don’t want to read about other people living through it while I currently am. But I understand the author’s reasoning.

This book did get more interesting as I read and as a music person I appreciated Lily’s talent and desire to sing.

My thoughts:

I totally loved Erica’s last series so I was very excited to read this one…she did not let me down and I loved that there was appearance of a character from the previous series.

I will say it was bit strange that our two main characters really didn’t have much interaction until after the half way point. But that didn’t take away from the story, it was just different then other books when the two characters have a lot of interaction early on.

I also found it interesting that we find out who stole the painting and I wondered how Erica would hold my attention, but that she did.

If you like historical books with mystery and romance I am sure you will enjoy this one. I can’t wait to read the next one.

But as danger closes in on Ainsley during her murder investigation, Linc will have to find the courage to protect her.

The only question is, will it be too little, too late?

My thoughts:

This might be my favorite book in this series. There are a couple of mysteries going on in this book. At first I was like, this is too much to keep track of, by Patricia did a great job balancing everything going on and keeping things straight.

There are a lot of characters to keep track of as well but stick with it, you will get them in keep them in order in your mind.

This is non-stop action and I had trouble walking away from this book. If you like romantic suspense, but heavy on the suspense, you will enjoy this book.

My thoughts:

This is a very well written and emotional book. Women dealing with their issues, who can’t relate? We all have something we are dealing with. I love that these women come together and support each other, of course not without a bit of drama.

Elisa drove me a little crazy, because I wanted her to take better care of herself and stand up for herself. She does start to do that and more things develop as the book unfolds.

Overall, a very good read.

What’s going on with the Thatcher sisters?

Readers have asked me this question so often since The Best We’ve Been, the third and what I considered final book in the Thatcher Sisters Series, which released in May 2020. In the series, Payton, Jillian, and Johanna each had their moment center stage. Some readers told me they’d come to understand and, yes, even like older sister Johanna. Quite a feat, considering how she annoyed readers in book one, Things I Never Told You.

I ended the series with the trio of sisters in a good place – the best they’d ever been.        The circumstances of their lives weren’t all tied off in nice, neat bows, but then real life isn’t like that, is it? And as the author, I was content to leave the sisters there and let readers imagine what happened next.

And then 2020 disrupted life for all of us. For me? Writing didn’t happen. I promised myself I would dive back into story in 2021. What better way than with a Christmas novella? So many readers love Christmas stories. And what better time to revisit Payton, Jillian, and Johanna and answer readers’ question: What’s going on with the Thatcher sisters?

I wasn’t sure myself. Part of the fun of writing is rediscovering well-known characters as you discover a new story. Set against the backdrop of Christmas? That was just an added blessing.

It’s been Christmas time for me throughout 2021 – a time to enjoy family traditions and face some unexpected changes. Welcome back to the Thatcher family!

My thoughts:

I’ve read all three of the previous books in this series so it was fun to meet up with the Thatcher sisters and get their mom’s perspective on things in this book. It was also fun to get into the Christmas spirit by experiencing their traditions and seeing how things were changing with them.

If I am being honest, I wanted a neat and tidy ending where everyone comes to faith and gets what they want. But Beth kept it real. Although it does have a satisfying ending it isn’t all wrapped up with a neat bow, it is real and I do appreciate that, too.

Overall, a quick and interesting read.

My thoughts:

I was glad this second book in the series finally came out. I really enjoyed the first book so I was excited to read Flynn’s story. However, if you haven’t read the first book don’t worry, you can fully enjoy this one.

Flynn and Linnae are complete opposites so I was curious to see how they would find their way to each other’s hearts. As usually, Jody build the romance up slowly until you can hardly take it anymore.

If you are Jody Hedlund fan and you/or you enjoy historical romance I am sure you will enjoy this book.
