Sometimes the hardest step to take is the first step forward

When Englishwoman Catherine Haynes loses both her father and her home in 1856, she decides to cross the Atlantic to find her American mother’s family in Louisiana. She enlists the help of Tom Worthington, a dashing Key West man who makes his living salvaging wrecked ships.

When Catherine arrives at the plantation, she finds that her family has left it in the care of a manager–who’s let it fall into disrepair. Torn between returning to Key West with Tom and beginning the hard work of restoring the plantation, Catherine soon finds herself snared in a plot to steal her inheritance. When an incredible secret comes to light, both she and Tom will face a choice: grip their dreams ever tighter or step forward in faith–even if it costs them everything.

My thoughts and giveaway:

I have adored this series so I couldn’t wait for this newest installment. And this one has such a different feeling and plot to it.

For me the beginning was a bit slow, yet I understand why that first half of the book had to be there, it had to lay the ground work for the rest of the book. I could have easily put it down and walked away, I didn’t feel overly connected to the story…but then we get to the half way point and my reader brain was like, “Yes, this is what I have been waiting for.”

Catherine is a strong character who wants to find the truth. Tom is a strong hero who wants to seek justice. Together they make a great team.

The mystery surrounding Catherine’s family I found so interesting. I couldn’t wait for the truth to be revealed. That definitely drove the second half of this book.

If you enjoy historical romance with a mysterious setting you will like this one.

honor redeemed

Her future–and her heart–hang in the balance.

Two years ago, Prosperity Jones waved farewell to her beloved David as the army sent him to faraway Key West. Now with her parents gone, she has but one prospect for the future: make the dangerous journey from Nantucket to Key West to reunite with David and secure a happier life.

But when Prosperity arrives penniless in the South, she is dismayed to find David has not been eagerly awaiting their reunion. In fact, he is married to someone else. Scrambling to survive and nursing a broken heart, Prosperity gains the friendship–and the affection–of a kind doctor. Could he be the answer to her loneliness? Or will her life be upended by circumstance yet again?

With a deft hand, Christine Johnson fills the senses with the sights, sounds, and smells of Key West in this heartwarming story of honor lost, honor redeemed, and a love forged in adversity.

My thoughts:

Everything I have read by Christine I have really enjoyed. I had to wait a year for this book, but it was worth that wait.

She has created a wonderful story filled with tension, confusion and love.

The whole time I was reading this I kept wondering how things could possibly work out. Just when it looked like it could something new happened to cause another obstacle.

This book has a great message of forgiveness, something I believe we all struggle with in some way.

If you read the first book in this series you will happy to see Elizabeth and Rourke again and even if you didn’t read that book you will adore them in this book.

Another wonderful story by Christine.

Can a girl enamored with the adventurous seas ever be content with the tame life of a Southern belle?

When her mother dies, Elizabeth Benjamin heads home to Key West, determined to transform herself into the perfect Southern belle her parents always wished her to be. But nothing goes according to plan. Her brother resents her, the servants do not obey her, and Rourke O’Malley, the dashing man she vowed to forget, refuses to relinquish his hold on her heart. Worst of all, it becomes painfully obvious that her father is not the man he appears to be.

As family secrets come to light, Elizabeth is faced with a difficult choice: to perform her duty and abandon her dreams, or to leave her life of privilege behind to chase the man her father sees as little better than a pirate.

From the first emotional page, author Christine Johnson throws you into a world of impossible choices, hidden desires, and heart-melting romance in the steamy South.

Christine Johnson is the author of several books for Steeple Hill and Love Inspired and has been twice named a finalist for Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart award. When not writing, she loves to hike and explore God’s majestic creation. She and her husband, a Great Lakes ship pilot, split their time between northern Michigan and the Florida Keys. Learn more at

My thoughts and giveaway:

I have read a couple of Christine’s Love Inspired books and really enjoyed them so I was excited to get my hands on a full length novel and get lost in one of her stories.

I wasn’t disappointed.

From the first page I was drawn into the drama of this story. There are so many layers I’m not sure where to  begin.

We start with a hurricane that changes Elizabeth’s course in life. We catch up with her four years later in another storm and finds herself in a mess. But she gets rescued by the one man she loves and the one she can never have.

She finds herself trying to fill her mother’s shoes but finds discouragement a constant companion. She is torn between doing what others expect of her and what her heart tells her to do.

How will this all play out? How can she make everyone happy, including herself? Is it even possible? You will have to read the book to find out 🙂
